Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to invite you to attend the 51st Annual Meeting of the Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention, June 25–29, 2011, at a fantastic venue—the Loews Coronado Bay Resort in Coronado, California. The theme for this year’s meeting is “Translational Research in Birth defects: From Mechanism to Epidemiology.” The Program Committee, chaired by John Graham, has put together a great program around this theme, and the Education Committee, chaired by Ludmila Bakhireva, has developed Continuing Education Courses entitled “From Bench to Community: Methods for Identification of Novel Teratogens,” that fit the theme as well. The program offers an exciting variety of scientific sessions on topics ranging from stem cells to zebrafish embryology to epidemiology, chemical safety assessment to nutrition. Once again, we are pleased to offer joint sessions and a joint registration fee to maximize interactions with our sister societies, NBTS and OTIS. Reduced registration rates have been established to assist Emeritus members attend both the meeting and the Education Courses; your continued participation in the Annual Meeting is very important to us.
Our Annual Meeting provides us with the opportunity to promote our shared vision and scientific identity as researchers focused on the causes, manifestations, intervention and prevention of birth defects, both structural and functional. It also is an expression of our scientific diversity, as a Society of clinicians, scientists and science policy regulators, from academic, industrial, and government sectors. There is no better occasion to learn about the latest scientific research in teratology, to interact with scientists whom you have not yet met, and to network with old friends and colleagues. Why Attend the 2011 Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention Meeting?
The 51st Annual Meeting of the Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention will be held June 25–29, 2011, in Coronado, California. The theme of the meeting is “Translational Research in Birth Defects: From Mechanism to Epidemiology.” This meeting emphasizes translational research in the study of birth defects. We will review clinical and epidemiologic methods for identifying novel teratogens as well as discuss the use of embryonic stem cells for toxicity testing and review the use of zebrafish model systems to understand mechanisms of teratogenesis. There will be special emphasis on the risks of chemicals in our environment, environmental influences on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and the impact of iodine on thyroid health and function. We will discuss paternally mediated developmental toxicity, new mechanisms of teratogenesis, and new findings concerning known human teratogens. These discussions will cover the entire field of teratology from basic science insights to human epidemiology studies.
The 51st Annual Meeting will take place over four days. In addition, the Education Course “From Bench to Community: Methods for Identification of Novel Teratogens” will be offered in two parts on Saturday. The two poster sessions will be held on Monday evening and Tuesday afternoon. The meeting will conclude on Wednesday with the banquet.
The Annual Meeting provides a place and time to catch up with colleagues, make new friends, network, and indulge in discussions from philosophical to practical with established experts in the field, new researchers, and students. It is also a place and time to promote and express our scientific diversity as a Society of fellow clinicians, scientists and science policy regulators from academic, industrial, and government sectors. The meeting will be held at the Loews Coronado Bay Resort, which offers direct access to the Silver Strand State Beach and is a mere two-mile drive from downtown San Diego. A reduced sleeping room rate of $199 has been obtained at the Loews Coronado Bay Resort.
Emeritus members are encouraged to attend the meeting and the Education Courses. Reduced registration rates have been established for Emeritus members of the Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention to participate in the Annual Meeting. To qualify for this rate you must be an approved Emeritus Member of the Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention.
